Thinking of the Can Coffee or plastic cup coffee products which we can buy easily at a convenience store.

: I've got hungry for coffee... wanting a sweet one. And I entered a store. And found there are so many kinds of coffee... The sorts are getting grow... And now it's hard to choose one... When I was young, I drank any... And I didn't feel anything but nowadays, I feel slight headache when I drink something bad... This is why I am so picky in the ingredients of the products.

 Ingredients

The processed coffee products contains so many ingredients... not like the hand made coffee at coffee shops. There are two unidentified ingredients which are 'emulsifier(유화제)' and 'combined congener(합성착향료)'. This kinds of general terms meaning something they want to hide....

And then I found a coffee containing no emulsifier... At least I thought it didn't...

As you see, there is sucrose fatty acid ester(자당지방산에스테르) instead of 'emulsifier(유화제)'

Name is Cafe Mocca. It's made by Seoul F and B, not known to me so far.

The homepage of Seoul F and B

As you see, there are 'Emulsifier(유화제)' and 'Combined congener(or flavourings, 합성착향료)'

 I did some research

The emulsifier makes oil and water mixed together. Among emulsifiers, there are 'Glycerin Esters of Fatty Acids, Sucrose Ester of Fatty Acids, Sorbitan Esters of Fatty Acids, Propylene Glycol Esters of Fatty Acids and so on. So many kinds. Yes, the Sucrose Ester of Fatty Acids(자당지방산에스터) is also emulsifier. Yes, the product has the emulsifier. Just different name.

I think the general term is the problem in the ingredient table. They should specify which one is used as emulsifier... And I had to research on it. There are more than 20 emulsifiers...

On the Internet there is no proper material on it in Korean web sites. And it has been found that there is no known safety issue on the ingredient. Of course it's only about the Sucrose Ester of Fatty Acids... I don't know of the other emulsifiers...

 1. Chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity of sucrose fatty acid esters in Fischer 344/DuCrj rats.

 2. Scientific Opinion on the safety of sucrose esters of fatty acids prepared from vinyl esters of fatty acids and on the extension of use of sucrose esters of fatty acids in flavourings

Instead the following web site is saying it's contraversial ingredient... it might have bad effect on health.

3. 위험한 식품첨가물 종류와 유해성 논란(Web page in Korean)

According to the article, the bigger problem is the artificial flavourings. Yes, of course the emulsifiers and the flavourings are all artificial not natural. It should not have a good effect on health. As a consumer, we cannot know the exact ingredient just by seeing the name, emulsifier or flavourings... It's the main problem...

And I don't buy that kind of product any more... I came to feel again the need to be careful.

In conclusion, there is no good or reliable can or plastic coffee or soft drinks in Korea.
